Minutes of 30 November 2009 Meeting

VP Membership Dyah represented the executive Committee and opened the meeting. She gave information about the history and purpose of Toastmasters and JTC in a nutshell.
Then came the cheerful Toastmaster of the Meeting ACB /CL Astuty. She was very astute in sprinkling refreshing remarks, stories and quotations throughout the whole meeting. One story was about our JTC member CC Eva who was able to negotiate much better about money after she sharpened her communication skills at JTC. TABLE TOPICS SPEECH SESSION :

Table Topics Master ATM Robert was very creative to involve the audience with lottery and quotes :
- DTM Harlina picked out TM Fadli who mentioned about the life story of Steve Jobs (Apple).
- Guest Rini picked out TM Kardinal who said that one does not need to be rich to become happy or famous.
- CC Dyah picked out Guest Puruhito who talked about how more money means misery… in a different way.
- ACB Astuty picked out TM Hotma who talked about how money leads to power and power leads to…. women…
- TM Selvi picked out DTM Harlina who said that it is hard to prove how money can make you unhappy.
- TM Olivia picked out ACB Astuty who said that we cannot live without money.

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

TM Hotma introduced himself in his first speech, the Icebreaker (4-6 min) entitled:” Big Step”, and described how he stepped from the medical into the pharmaceutical world.

TM Kardinal in his BM # 2 , Organize your speech (5-7 min) entitled “ The people change, so does climate “, reminded us of the devastating effects of climate change and who is doing something about it.

EVALUATION SESSION

Tandem General Evaluators (GEs) ATM Robert and DTM Harlina were able to guide the JTC audience through the evaluation process. DTM Harlina reminded the JTC-ers to bring their Competent Leader (CL) maunual every time they go to the meeting, even though they do not have a role to play, because once in a while there may be still a role open for them to fill in.
Individual evaluator CC Dyah and DTM Harlina gave sharp feedback.
Further teammembers were enthusiastic to fill in the following jobs: Grammarian TM Fadli, Timer TM Selvi, Ah and WOD counter TM Olivia and ballot counter Guest Rini.

BUSINESS SESSION

Announcements:

- VPM Dyah invited JTC-ers who are interested to join the International Speech and Table Topics contest in January 2010 as a contestant of a contest official, to contact her for more information.

Theme : Discovery Channels in Our Life

VP Membership Dyah, as acting JTC president opened the meeting and gave the floor to an inspiring Toastmaster of the Meeting ACS /CL Imung.
She showered us with thought provoking statements verbally and with powerpoint.. .
A sample: It is not easy to discover about yourself, therefore take a moment to stop…and think about yourself. … Enjoy discovering yourself though the channels. She asked everybody in the audience :" what did you discover about yourself today ?"

TABLE TOPICS SPEECH SESSION :

Table Topics master DTM Harlina took us on a road of (self) discovery :
- ATM Robert explained about the possible "lesson learned" after watching the "end of times"- movie 2012…: "Be prepared"
- TM Kardinal explained how “you can discover more about the true character of a person in an hour play than in a day/year of conversation.
- TM Hotma : said that music can change the mood of a person and vice versa
- Guest Irwan shared about the difference in culture when he was in the UK…
VP Membership CC Dyah inducted our newest member : TM Hotma ! Mentor is DTM Harlina.

PREPARED SPEECH SESSION

CC Astuty delivered the 5th Speech of the Advanced manual “ interpretive reading,” Oratorical Speech: “ (8-10 min), borrowing Oprah Winfrey's speech and acting as she was Ms Winfrey herself. Some phrases that I remembered from the speech was "We all want to be heard. By sharing your stories, you can make people feel themselves.”

TM Selvi broke the ice ... better borrow ATM Robert's phrase.. she crushed the ice with her first speech, the icebreaker (4-6 min) entitled “ To love me is to know me”. She gave us a lot of insight in her work, hobbies and her thoughts on friendship.

EVALUATION SESSION

General Evaluator (GE) CC Ivan was very attentive and confidently led his team : Individual evaluators ATM Robert and ACG/ALS Johan were very alert and encouraging.
Further teammembers paid a lot of attention : Grammarian AND timer CC Dyah, Ah and WOD counter TM Kardinal and ballot counter TM Hotma.

BUSINESS SESSION

Announcements:

Division I Governor ACG/ALS Johan motivated the Jakarta Toastmasters Club members to be the number ONE club again in Indonesia... to take friends, family, long lost members to the club meetings. To increase and retain our members... so that we can have an attendance of 20-30 people again.
VP PR DTM Harlina said that to read the Toastmaster magazine on-line, "Click on the member's part of www.toastmasters. org and if you don't know your password,click it and it will be sent to your email address.

There is so much for you to do and learn in Toastmasters!

Each Toastmasters club is unique. Club themes are as varied as the club members themselves – some focus on a hobby or pastime, some are organized to meet a specific company’s training needs and some provide a place for members to practice their English. But despite their differences, most successful clubs have this in common: They run tightly organized club meetings in which everyone has a clear sense of structure and purpose.

What Happens When I Join?
With more than 270,000 members in more than 13,000 clubs in 116 countries, you’re sure to find a meeting near you. Most groups meet weekly or biweekly for one to two hours. The meetings are organized so that everyone will have a chance to speak, should they want to. You schedule your own speaking assignments a few weeks in advance, so you’ll have plenty of time to prepare.

You’ll be assigned a mentor to help you settle in and get through your first speaking roles. Speaking assignments vary and your first will be an “ice breaker” – a four- to six-minute speech to introduce yourself to the group. As you grow in confidence, your assignments will grow with you.

Whenever you stand up and speak, you receive encouraging, helpful feedback on how it went and how you can improve next time. This proven method will help you build your confidence and skills quickly and affordably!

Because Communication Isn't Optional

Whether verbal or nonverbal, let’s face it – communication isn’t optional.

Every day we are tasked with a variety of situations where communication comes into play. How many times have you heard, “I could see it on your face” or, “Your body language speaks volumes”? How many times have you spoken off-the-cuff and then later wished you’d said something else?

Developing and honing this important skill, along with the other skills you gain in Toastmasters, will give you the confidence you need in a variety of areas, both personally and professionally.

In these tough economic times, your skills are even more important. Maybe you are looking for a job? Having the competitive edge may be what lands you the position. In Toastmasters, you practice thinking on your feet. The more you practice, the more self-confidence you gain, which will give you the advantage you need.

Does your current job require you to give business presentations? You can develop and polish these skills by working through the Communication Track in the Toastmasters educational program. By continuously practicing your speeches, as well as the components, such as speech organization, timing, vocal variety and gestures, you will have gained the ability to present a powerful presentation.

Toastmasters training also creates great teachers – the kind who lead classes or training sessions effectively. You’ll be able to perfect new instructional techniques, gain experience and develop the confidence to become a great teacher.

Maybe you are an attorney or in law school? Toastmasters is the ideal place to perfect your persuasive speaking skills so that you are able to present persuasive opening arguments, summations or cross-examinations and conduct yourself in a clear and concise manner in the courtroom.

Toastmasters: Public Speaking and More

The first thing most people hear about Toastmasters is that membership can help them become better presenters and conquer public speaking fears. That’s true, but it’s also true that Toastmasters offers much more. By participating in the meetings, members enjoy learning and practicing skills in various areas that can improve not only their social lives, but their professional lives as well.

If you’ve never attended a Toastmasters meeting, you may be puzzled by the assortment of activities available to members. Not everyone gives a prepared speech at every meeting. Volunteers enjoy several roles that help them develop confidence in other areas. Furthermore, a member can develop skills without ever volunteering – simply showing up and having fun can bring surprising benefits.

For example, time management is a skill that is prized in many avenues of life – particularly in the workplace – and members enjoy plenty of practice in this area. Several key events in each meeting are timed, and everyone receives feedback with notes on their successes as well as tips for improvement in working with the clock. It’s amazing how quickly a new member learns to keep the time limits on presentations.

A Cordial Atmosphere
Another benefit of membership is the camaraderie that develops between the members. Many people join for similar reasons – perhaps they’re overcoming a fear of public speaking or they want to move up the corporate ladder. Because of their shared circumstances, it’s hard not to form friendships. When you’ve applauded your fellow Toastmaster for presenting her first speech, you’ll recognize that look of gratitude on her face. The bond of friendship that forms between people who are learning and enjoying fun times together can last a lifetime. And the opportunities for networking abound.

But what about the fun? Some parts of a meeting seem to draw laughter. For example, Toastmasters often practice their impromptu speaking skills. Just watch the antics of volunteers who boldly stand and answer surprise questions in one- to two-minute sessions. This might seem like a game – and to some degree, it is – but it’s a game with hidden benefits. Everyone who participates learns to think and speak coherently and without hesitation. They build confidence each time they master a topic – which really helps later with such challenges as job interviews. Even a member who simply watches and applauds will develop critical thinking skills while having fun trying to figure out how he might have answered that last question.

A Place to Develop Skills
When a member does perform a speech, she benefits in more ways than merely presenting a talk to an audience of friends and supporters. She also learns to write a speech that dazzles. The first few projects in the Competent Communication manual, the basic manual for Toastmasters, offers help in developing speechwriting skills. Members can practice organizing their thoughts on the page, getting to their point quickly and using language with eloquence. This leads to clear written communication the member can rely on – whether she’s writing a cover letter for a résumé or a personal note to a friend.

Some volunteers can build their organizational and record-keeping skills while they help to set up and run the meetings or keep track of their fellow members’ progress. It’s not hard to learn the steps to success in these projects, and the volunteers are then able to transfer what they’ve learned to their careers and personal lives.

The skills don’t stop there. When members spend time in Toastmasters meetings, their confidence grows. They discover that they can successfully perform the same kinds of activities outside of Toastmasters. Their circle of experience widens, and they’re ready to try new challenges. This is why so many companies host Toastmasters meetings in their offices. Members become stronger, more confident leaders at work – and highly valued employees.

All of these provide Toastmasters with opportunities to develop skills that reach beyond giving a speech. And for many members, the benefits of this personal growth may mean more in the long run to their success in life. Whether they’re interested in honing leadership skills, strengthening one-on-one communication, practicing presentations, excelling at job interviews or just becoming a more articulate or dynamic speaker, Toastmasters is a benefit to everyone.
