"CONNECT" - 16 July 2012

Last Monday, Toastmaster of the Meeting (TOM), TM Suryani, commenced the meeting with a witty video of a Facebook user who took every single moment in his life onto his Facebook page. With the clip, ToM wanted to show to the audience how people have been connected and made a network through social media. The meeting theme was “CONNECT” and Word of the Day was “network”.

The audience in the room were even more connected as the ToM was supported by the whole GE Network led by the General Evaluator, ACG/CL Robert Purnomobagyo alongside the Grammarian (TM Bena), the Timer (TM Syariful Lubis), the Ballot Counter (TM Kevin Meng), and the “Ah”/WoD Counter (CC Neeraj Khiani).

Unlike the previous JTC meetings, in that evening the audience were delighted with the Entertainment Session brought by JTC’s very own entertainer, CC Fathia Saripuspita. In her 7-minute speech, CC Fathia enlightened the audience about being an independent and invited everyone in the room to celebrate independence.

Moving on to the Prepared Speech Session, TM Martha Octavia delivered her “tricky speech” (as her evaluator, CC Bahtiar Manurung called it) entitled “Choosing the Right Hat in Your Life” (Basic Manual #5). She started off her speech with a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “A Man is but the product of his thoughts: What he thinks, he becomes”. Throughout her speech, she effectively elaborated to the audience that wearing different hats―here serve as the metaphor of approach/method/way of thinking/way of perceiving things―in order to match up with different situations can be advantageous while unwisely choosing the hat can result in some unwanted outcomes. Through her presentation slides and interactive speech, TM Martha interestingly proved how two persons in the same room could have such contradicting opinions or views on an exact same circumstance.

The second speaker was TM Ariel Wylie who came all the way from the Motivators Club to encourage the audience in JTC to appreciate themselves through her speech, “Celebrate Yourself” (Basic Manual #5). As TM Ariel showed her quality in delivering her speech with her body language, CC Dinesh Vaswani, her evaluator, congratulated her that she managed to fulfil the objective of BM #5, i.e. Your Body Speaks.

The third prepared speech was delivered by TM Guddy Bahirwani who wowed the audience with her very first ice-breaker speech, captioned “Project Happiness”. TM Guddy shared with the audience that she is currently in the journey to finding her life purpose. By signing up for Toastmasters and giving out her first speech, she has marked a milestone in her project happiness (we wish you a very good luck, Miss Bahirwani!). In her evaluation part, DTM Harlina Indra went specific by pointing out that TM Guddy gave smooth transitions in her speech and just an appropriate amount of gesture. DTM Harlina also thanked her for giving out a beautiful speech.

Lastly, TM Sai Blackbyrn ended the Prepared Speech Session with his Basic Manual #3 and was evaluated by the precise and constructive evaluator, ACG Henrietta A. Kristanto (Etta). Although put as the closing speaker for the session, TM Sai certainly had nothing to worry as he successfully hypnotised the audience (the ladies in particular) with a speech entitled “Lesson in Love”. As a true believer of the assertion “thing happens for a purpose”, TM Sai conveyed to the audience how that assertion could really help one in going through some of very awful or unfortunate situations in love life and carrier/work life. He emphasised that, after all, “paradise is what you make it”. Well said mate!
