JTC Minutes of Meeting 11 December 2006
Venue: Inul Vizta Karaoke, Plaza Semanggi
Attendees: 12 people consisting of 10 JTCers, 1 visiting Toastmaster from Essentials Club and 1 guest
JTC wanted to rejuvenate the meeting in order to create a different but fun learning environment. So we decided to hold a meeting at Inul Vizta Karaoke lounge to loosen up the atmosphere and provide a media for everyone to reveal their hidden talents. There was one major rule that night – everyone who spoke had to sing.
Like every other meeting, it was opened by our Club President, CTM/CL Harry Nizam, but this time President Harry opened the meeting by singing the song ‘Always’ by Bon Jovi. After briefly explaining the reason why we were at the karaoke lounge, President Harry then introduced a special guest. It was our Division I Governor Maria Megawati from Essentials Club. Division Governor Maria handed over a “Distinguished Service” certificate for JTC that was presented during the Toastmasters convention in Kuala Lumpur . Thank you, Maria, and thank you for participating in our karaoke night with your lovely voice (you’ll find out later what she sang...).
Moving on with the meeting, Pres. Harry introduced the TOM of the evening (who volunteered on the spot) TM Aulia. Aulia kicked off the meeting by singing ‘My Way’ and said that he’s going to lead the meeting in his own way. Our impromptu TOM chose “RHYTHM” as the Word of the Day and encouraged everyone to use it during the meeting.
After his brief introduction, Aulia introduced the General Evaluator for the evening who was none other than our Club President – CTM/CL Harry. GE Harry was very fortunate to have a lively GE team that consisted of a Grammarian – CTM/CL Imung, Timer – TM Thomas, Ah/WOD Counter – TM Sukimawati and Ballot Counter – TM Susan.
The control was handed over to TOM Aulia again who decided to switch the first session to the Prepared Speech session as there was only one speaker that night.
CTM/CL Imung delivered the 3rd project from the Interpersonal Communications Advanced Manual called ‘Diffusing Verbal Criticism”. Her speech title was “Fire or Water” where she informed us the steps on how to handle criticism. As part of the project, Imung then performed a scenario where she had to handle criticism from someone. It was a role play together with TM Tassya. Tassya was an angry customer who criticized Imung for selling her faulty cosmetics. After taming the angry customer and concluding her speech, Imung sang ‘I Will Survive’ for us.
Before he proceeded to the Table Topics Session, TOM Aulia requested GE Harry to call upon our one and only individual evaluator for that evening – DTM Harlina . Harlina gave a very thorough evaluation on Imung’s speech project. Afterwards, she got everyone rocking by singing Queen’s classic – ‘We Will Rock You’.
TOM Aulia took over again and introduced the Table Topics Master – TM Utami (also impromptu). Utami decided to do something different. She asked everyone to pick out a song to sing and tell us why they wanted to sing that song. Then, she told them to sing the song. These were our instant artists:
- Div.Gov. Maria: ‘Under Pressure’ by Queen, because she was feeling under pressure due to having to sing a song and waiting for club confirmations to join TLI.
- TM Sukimawati: ‘Morning Has Broken’, because she wants to thank God for a beautiful life.
- CC Astuty: ‘Always Be My Baby’ by Mariah Carey, she said this was one of her favourite songs to sing but also the hardest.
- TM Susan: ‘Greatest Love of All’ by Whitney Houston, because the song inspires her to do what she wants to do without being shadowed by other people.
- TM Tassya: ‘Material Girl’ by Madonna, because she wanted to show everyone her naughty and mischievous side.
- TM Thomas: ‘How Can I Tell Her’, this song was actually about a man who was seeing another woman and didn’t know how to tell his girlfriend. We hope you’re not showing us your polygamy tendency, Thomas…J
- Guest Ita: ‘Flying Without Wings’ by Westlife, because she was eager to get her dreams.
And last but not least, Table Topics Master Utami entertained us with ‘SMS’ dangdut song. She said her boyfriend was looking through her cell phone and found an SMS from an unknown somebody…uh oh…
After the Table Topics Session, TOM Aulia asked GE Harry to lead the evaluation session where the GE team gave their reports respectively. For the Ballot Counter, the voting was done for the best performance from the Table Topics Session since we only had one speaker and one evaluator.
The speaker voted with the best performance that evening was – the naughty and mischievous TM Tassya. Who celebrated with a portrayal of Linkin Park ’s ‘One Step Closer’. Together with DTM Harlina , the two lady rockers jumped up and down, head banged and howled…
TOM Aulia handed the control back to President Harry who concluded the meeting. But, the evening didn’t stop there! Everyone was so warmed up that we kept singing all our favourite songs. We had solo singers, duets and even a group encore. If the karaoke waiters didn’t come into the room and tell us our time was up, we could’ve kept singing the whole night. We definitely had fun and it was entertaining too!
