"BE SIMPLE AND TAKE IT EASY" - 26 November 2012

“Fellow Toastmasters and Distinguished Guests, do you know that chaotic environment encourages creativity? So tonight, loosen your collar, take it easy, break the rules! Yes, you can do that because I am your ToM for tonight’s meeting!” That was the opening mark done by CC/CL Ivan Nurhadijaya when he introduced the meeting theme yesterday, “BE SIMPLE AND TAKE IT EASY”.

Old saying says “Behind Every Successful Man is A Great Woman” but our ToM believes that “Behind Every Successful ToM is A Great GE”. ToM then called upon the General Evaluator, CC Neeraj Khiani to introduce his GE Team. They were TM Arief Rasyad (from Sandoz Toastmasters Club) as the Grammarian; TM Nurdrajat as the Timer; TM Suryani as the Ballot Counter; and TM Dina Novita as the “Ah” and WoD (modest) Counter.

Moving on to the prepared speech session, TM Kusnawara broke the ice by delivering his BM #1 entitled “How Understanding People is Important to Achieve Your Goal”. Besides briefly telling the audience about his family, TM Kus inserted a story that he recently experienced. His story was about a chaotic and dilemmatic experience as he had to juggle between taking his beloved mother―whose knee suffered from an illness― to a hospital and at the same time trying to attend a seminar in which he was the speaker in time regardless the heavy rain and vicious traffic (Jakarta is a darling, remember?). TM Kus was evaluated by TM Benazir, who saluted his massive energy, his story-telling style, and the fact that he had organised his speech (opening, body, closing). For his future speeches, TM Benazir suggested TM Kus to use clearer transitions when he moved from one section to another. Also, she advised TM Kus to relax himself and slow down his tempo when he emphasised the message in his conclusion.

The second and last prepared speaker was TM Syariful Alamsyah Lubis, who presented his 8th project entitled “Brief Intro on Shipping and Types of Ships”. Romantic sea life gist and beautiful quotes are the main benefits that the audience will always get every time our Captain Lubis takes over the stage. Last night, as expected, our premonition did not miss! Using some cracking-up photos in his slides, TM Lubis made his presentation entertaining. He was evaluated by ACG Henrietta A. Kristanto (Etta) who complemented him on the entertaining photos and beautiful quotes. ACG Etta suggested TM Lubis, to simplify the content in his slides to several lines to help the audience follow his presentation. Also, she advised him to eliminate unnecessary jargon or technical terms in his speech since that might cause confusion for the audience.

Furthermore, the Table Topics Session was led by the Table Topic Master, TM Joko Purnomo who threw out all-about-simple topics who were apparently not so simple to answer by the simply daring impromptu speakers! Those spontaneous speakers were TM Martha Octavia, Guest VJ Nambiar, Guest Marada, Guest Abam, and TM Dwiardi Vergiawan.

Moreover, the meeting was even more special as DTM William Lim from Singapore gave his resourceful Educational Session, “Presenting at Your Best”. Clearly, after his session, the audience immensely benefited from his handy tips on how to capture attention, to speak with confidence, and to leave a lasting impression when a speech is delivered. He also showed to the audience some great approaches to craft speech so that it strengthens the ideas of the speech effectively.

At the end of the whole sessions i.e. prepared speech, table topic, and evaluation session, the Ballot Counter, TM Yani, announced ACG Etta as the Best Evaluator, and Guest VJ as the Best Table Topic Speaker.

The 23 simply wonderful people adjourned the meeting with simply happy feeling and they simply could not wait until the next meeting to come!
