"BREAKING THE LIMITS" - 17 September 2012

Have you been in doubt on how to break your limits? Let our meeting show you how.

Last night, Toastmasters of the Meeting (ToM), TM Nur Agus Suryoko called the audience to break their limits and to “achieve” (word of the day) what they thought were impossible. ToM commenced the meeting by playing an inspirational short video that showed some great athletes from London 2012 Paralympics as they continued to push boundaries of what was possible during their exercise time.

ToM was even more energised with the supportive General Evaluator Team consisting of TM George Arif as the General Evaluator, TM Nino as the Grammarian, TM Arief Rasyad (from Sandoz Toastmasters Club) as the Ballot Counter, and ACB/CL Imung Hikmah as the Timer, and ACG Henrietta A. Kristanto as the “Ah” and WoD Counter.

Before entering the prepared speech session, JTC’s Vice President of Membership, CC/CL Susanna Jahja conducted a special session i.e. the Members Induction Ceremony to formally welcome new JTC’s members.

In the prepared speech session, there were 3 limit-breakers/prepared speakers together with their individual evaluators.

The first limit-breaker was TM Suryani with her speech “Grateful” (Basic Manual #4). Here, she made a confession that there were times where she wanted to be someone else. However, she has come to realise that she has already had everything and what she needed to do was just to be grateful. TM Bena evaluated TM Suryani pointing out that what made her speech attractive were her genuine personal stories, fresh humour, and easy-listening speech. TM Bena suggested TM Suryani to insert conversations to make her speech lively and to incorporate rhetorical device for her closing.

The second limit-breaker was CC/CL Kardinal with his speech “Maximise the Benefits of JTC’s Website” (Advanced Manual #1). Through this speech, he invited the members of JTC to explore and utilise the JTC’s website (whom he created and administrates) until its limit! He explained to the audience that the website allows members to (among others): 1) make schedule on educational programmes by reserving role taker in the meeting agenda; 2) get a mentor or be a mentee; 3) find contacts of EXCO and all members of JTC; 4) get member resources for free (e.g. forms, manuals, files). So informative was his speech that some members (who had not logged in before) tried to log into the website through their own devices right after the meeting. His individual evaluator, DTM Harlina, told him of her impression towards his presentation. She recommended him to make the presentation more interactive by asking questions to the audience.

The last limit-breaker for the prepared speech session was TM Joko Purnomo delivering his Basic Manual #3 entitled “How to Deal with Stress”. As the content of his speech is always faced by many in everyday life, the audience found his speech useful and honest. His individual evaluator, ACB/ALB Sukardi (he is the member of both Motivators Toastmasters Club and SCBD Toastmasters Club while also chartered the Awesome Gold Toastmasters Club), highlighted that TM Joko’s speech showed his sincerity. To make his speech more memorable, ACB/ALB Sukardi advocated him to use acronym for his tips in dealing with Stress e.g. A-B-C-D-E.

The next session was the Table Topics Session directed by CC/CL Ivan Nurhadijaya. So great was the breaking-the limits-sphere that another 5 limit-breakers left their seats to do the impromptu speech!
