Club Contest on Humorous and Evaluation Speech - 3 September 2012
After 3 weeks of break, PB Taxand Auditorium was
finally shaken up once again with JTC’s Humorous & Evaluation Speech
Contest. With attendees recorded at more than 53 people, excitement was
undoubtedly smelt in the entire auditorium.
TM Prawira Adiputra (from Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters) as
the Sergeant at Arms (SAA) invited
the Contest Chair, CC Neeraj Khiani,
to the stage. After greeting the audiences and explaining the rules and
objectives of the contest, Contest Chair formally declared the contest began and
invited the Contest Master, CC Fathia
Saripuspita to run the contest.
The first contest was the Evaluation Speech Contest. Contest Master then revealed the Sample Speaker who appeared to be the
Club President of Jakarta Motivators Toastmasters, CC Tantia Dian! She, soon, amazed the audience with her quality of
speech, entitled “Hair”. In spite of the challenging speech, the 3 contestants, TM Benazir Syahril, ACB/ALB Ignasius Ronny, and TM Sai Blackbyrn respectively did their
best in the evaluation speech.

Contest Master then continued with the Humorous Speech Contest. TM Benazir Syahril, with her speech
entitled “Label”, shared her ‘tragic’ story to the audience. She found
herself locked up at just another km from the toll gate due to Jakarta vicious traffic.
She then decided to walk to the toll gate hoping that she might find an ojek (a motorcycle taxi) but soon found
out that in Indonesia motorcycle are not allowed to ride in toll (oh yes, she
is Indonesian). She felt even more devastated to face the facts that those
people she labelled as “nice people” refused to give her a lift or help her.
Yet, she was then surprised that a person she used to label as “dangerous
people” helped her without hesitation, i.e. a truck driver. One of the moments
that the audience laughed out loud was when she cried her prayer to God that
she was not married yet, that she was too single to be true, and that she did
not want to end her life like this (waiting for someone to help her in a
dangerous place like toll!).
CC/CL Ivan Nurhadijaya R then continued to tickle audience’s
stomachs with his speech entitled “Mad about Mandarin”. TM Ivan was a
Chinese-Indonesian who made his journey all the way to China to learn his
ancestor language, Mandarin. The audience might firstly admire his effort, in
the hope of mastering the language, making his language teacher his
conversation partner. Yet, the audience soon burst into laughter learning the
fact that the only conversations made between them were when TM Ivan said
“hello” to his teacher as he entered the class and said “good-bye” to her as he
left the class. He then ended up not only mad at how difficult it was to master
the language but also turned to a “mad” man himself. Aha!
Received the baton from TM Ivan, TM Sai Blackbyrn
continued the stomach-hurting marathon as he told
the audience about his adrenaline-junkie-friendship stories. He started
the speech with his story when he lived at a boarding school for
boys. There he presented the witty, colourful, and crazy boarding school
life
as a final year student. Striving to make his final year “memorable”,
along
with his friends, the kids made a huge mess, i.e. threw out peed-toilet
tissues
to their Principal’s car (bless that Principal!). As he moved to
Indonesia, he
found that he still could find those people whom he could share the
craziness
with. Along with his Germany and Indian friends, they climbed one of the
highest towers in Jakarta. His speech brought laughter as he perfectly
showed facial
expressions and mimicked the different accents and gestures of his
friends.

Last but not least, TM Nur Agus Suryoko gave his humorous and culture-rich speech
entitled “The Javanese”. Through
various short stories, he showed to the audience that he is a proud Javanese. He
told the audience that Javanese is used to adopt brand names then use them as
if those were the Javanese translations of certain goods. For example, most Javanese
refers all motorcycles as ‘honda’
although the real brand is actually Suzuki, etc. Moreover, Javanese loves to
simplify the difficult pronunciation of certain brands e.g. ‘Ray-Ban’ to ‘Riben’. However, despite those
simplifications, TM Agus continued, Javanese society actually preserves a
complex characteristic. This is reflected through, among others, the use of 5
language speech levels for expression of respect. Furthermore, as a Javanese,
TM Agus still holds that belief where a mother saying or praying would always
come true. However, he said that his mother is really a lovely lady to the
extent that even in her curse she will still insert that good prayer for him.
TM Agus brought the entire speech with such totality. He even wore lurik, one of Javanese traditional clothes,
to add to his total performance.
Finally, it was announced that ACB/ALB Ignasius Ronny was the winner
for Evaluation Speech Contest while TM
Nur Agus Suryoko was the winner for Humorous
Speech Contest. CONGRATULATION!
